Proper Maintenance for Leather Furniture

Everything in your home, from the roof to your trees wall hangings, requires some kind of maintenance and leather furniture is no exception. Leather furniture is a classic and elegant addition to your living space, but it requires the right amount of care and upkeep. Proper maintenance for leather furniture is critical, because if you do not take care of your leather furniture, it will lose value and begin to become damaged, sometimes beyond repair. The proper maintenance is not an unbearable amount of work, and often requires only a general consideration as you clean the other portions of the room.

Never wait to clean up spills or dropped food items on the leather furniture, especially spilled liquids, since they will cause significant damage. Leather should be kept clean of food and crumbs, but liquids present a definite risk of permanent damage if not cleaned right away. Test a small inconspicuous area of the leather before using even warm water to clean up particularly sticky spills. In most cases, a paper towel or similar absorbent cloth will suffice and take care of the problem area effectively.

Dusting is a great way to keep the leather looking great, and it requires no special tools. Just as a soft cloth or vacuum attachment will work wonders for removing dust and bits of debris from your Southwestern wall sculptures, it will also go a long way in keeping your leather furniture looking great. Just take special care never to use an abrasive pad or hard vacuum attachment as they will damage the leather. Scratching the leather is rarely a reversible type of damage; and the worse the scratch, the less likely it is that it can be repaired.

A product can say it is for use on leather without being appropriate for use on your leather furniture item. Watch for the addition of the word furniture to ensure that no damage is done to your furniture item when you condition or clean the item. Products that work great for your leather jacket may not be appropriate for your couch, and vice versa. Always be aware of what type of leather conditioner you are purchasing before using it on your furniture, and still test in an inconspicuous place to ensure that the conditioner does not damage your particular type of leather fabric.

Use a conditioner on the leather to keep it shiny and supple. There are many leather conditioners available to keep your leather looking great, and this increases or at the least maintains the value of the furniture. It may sound like a chore, but simply rubbing a conditioner into the leather with a soft cloth a couple times every year will extend the life of your leather furniture by a significant amount. Just be very careful about what conditioner you use, and take care to be sure that the product you choose is designed for use on leather furniture specifically.

Above all, simple common sense will tell you what your furniture needs. After all, it does not take a genius to know that if something spills on the furniture, you clean it up. When the dust collects, wipe it off. Simple, basic steps such as these are all it takes for a good portion of the proper maintenance for your home’s leather furniture.
