Fashionable and Functional Kitchen Designs

When designing a kitchen, it's important to keep both functionality and fashion in mind. Although most people consider functionality as their primary concern, adding beautiful decorating touches can create a kitchen that you will truly enjoy working in. If you are planning a new kitchen or are getting ready to redecorate your current one, here are some tips you can use to create a well-designed room that is easy to work in and beautiful to look at.

Assessing the Kitchen Work Space

Before starting to decorate, it's important to give some thought to your kitchen space. Pay attention to the overall layout of the room, as well as how you plan to use the kitchen. If you love to cook, and if other family members frequently cook with you, you'll have entirely different needs as compared to a person who rarely cooks or who lives alone. When designing a kitchen work space, it's usually best to think in terms of a "work triangle." By placing the most often used kitchen features at the tips of the triangle you'll minimize foot traffic in the kitchen, creating a layout that you can use with ease. In most cases, this means placing the stove, refrigerator and sink at the tips of the triangle. You should also take the rest of your home design into consideration when decorating your kitchen. The style of the kitchen often sets the design mood for the rest of the home. However, if you already have a home decorating style that works for you, sticking with that overall look in the kitchen will create a coordinated look.

Keeping it Simple

When designing the perfect kitchen, it's important to remember that simple is usually best. You'll be doing a lot of work in the kitchen, so it's best to keep the design simple and streamlined. Don't clutter the room with too many decorating accessories. It's also important to design plenty of effective storage areas, which will make it easier to keep your kitchen uncluttered. Most people like to incorporate as much countertop and cabinet storage area as possible into the kitchen. However, the storage space you will need depends on what you have to store, and how you use your kitchen. For example, if you have a beautiful set of fine china, you can combine functionality and fashion by storing them in cabinets with glass doors. However, if you have a lot of unwieldy kitchen appliances that you use occasionally, a large pantry with high shelves might work best.

Functional and Beautiful

When decorating the kitchen, try focusing on beautiful accessories that also add functionality. For example, if you do a lot of baking, a beautiful ceramic canister set can add a nice visual touch to your countertop area. If you have a professional set of pans, use them as a decorating accent by installing a hanging pot rack instead of a purely decorative wall decor. You'll save on cabinet storage space and add a beautiful look to your kitchen at the same time. Save wall accents, like flower wall sculptures, for the area around the dining table instead of hanging them in work zones.  A bowl of fruit on the countertop is not only handy for your family, but will look lovely as a decorating accent at the same time.
