Decorating a Porch off the Master Bedroom
63
If you have a porch that adjoins your master bedroom, you're in luck. Having a porch in this location will provide you with a myriad of decorating options. By using creative decorating techniques, you'll be able to visually connect the master bedroom and the outdoor porch area. The end result will be a bedroom that has been transformed into a luxurious bedroom suite. Here are just a few of the many ways you can decorate your porch to maximize the beauty, space and usefulness of the master bedroom.
Assessing the Space
Before you start to decorate, it's a good idea to carefully assess the living spaces you have to work with. If a sliding glass door or perhaps beautiful French doors connect the bedroom and the outdoor porch area, your decorating tasks will be much easier. Of course, you'll still have plenty of options if instead you have a plain exterior door connecting the two areas. However, you might want to consider replacing the plain door with a sliding glass door or French doors in order to get the most dramatic visual effect.
When connecting an interior room and an outdoor living space, it's also important to consider the current furniture configuration in both areas. Ideally, you'll want to arrange both your indoor and outdoor furniture pieces to create a cohesive area with good traffic flow. This task might be as simple as re-locating some of your porch furniture, or perhaps relocating the bed.
Using Color to Visually Connect the Bedroom and Porch
As is the case with almost every decorating task throughout the home, color is key when it comes to visually connecting your bedroom and exterior porch. Although you don't have to use the exact same colors in both areas, it can be helpful to choose colors that are either in the same family or which coordinate nicely together. One interesting color technique to try is using the main color of the bedroom as the accent color for the porch area, and vice versa. By using this method, you'll have plenty of color options from which to choose while still creating a nice cohesive look.
If you want to create the illusion of having a larger master bedroom, try using the same main color in both areas. For example, if you have hardwood floors in your bedroom, ideally you should have similarly colored wood decking on the porch. By having the same colors in both areas, your eyes will be fooled into thinking that the porch is simply an extension of the bedroom. You can enhance this effect by using the wall color of the bedroom as the porch's primary decorating color. Accessories, such as a large wall art or metal wall sculptures, can also be used to repeat colors, patterns and textures between the two spaces.
Decorating for Comfort and Relaxation
A porch connected to the master bedroom will provide you with many ways to add comfortable and relaxing touches to both living spaces. Make sure your porch has plenty of comfortable seating area so that you can fully enjoy the space. You should also try to create a sitting area close to the door that leads to the porch. By doing so, you'll be able to sit and enjoy the beautiful view of the outdoors, even on days when the weather is cold. You can make the outdoor porch a little more private by adding a fence, trellis or even a couple of divider screens if desired.
