Customized Storage Solutions for Nine-Year-Old Girl’s Bedroom
72
Any bedroom space offers its own set of storage challenges, but in a nine-year-old girl’s bedroom, the task of staying organized can become overwhelming. Too young to part with many of her girlhood toys and dolls, and on the brink of the teen years, she’s already collecting bigger girl stuff like fashion accessories, jewelry, CDs, craft and hobby items; and then there’s all of her clothes! But if you incorporate the following storage ideas, you can give your nine-year-old girl the freedom to express herself and still keep her room neat and tidy.

The Beauty of a Tall Bookcase
A bookcase is a ‘must-have’ in every child’s room and you can make the most of vertical wall space if you go with a taller bookcase instead of one that’s only two or three shelves high. The footprint and floor space used with a tall bookcase won’t be any greater than with a shorter one and you can utilize the upper shelves for decorative items, mementos, heirloom or special toys and items that are seldom used. Leave the lower shelves for items that your daughter needs to access regularly.
A Desk and Filing Cabinet
A nine-year-old girl is old enough to need a desk for school work and doing crafts and she needs some kind of filing system for school papers, projects, report cards and the like. Select a desk with filing drawers on one or both sides or invest in a small filing cabinet. If you don’t like the look of a standard filing cabinet in her room, paint it in a cheery color or choose one on rollers that can be tucked into a closet when it’s not needed.
Speaking of Closets…
And now for the real nightmare in the room – the ever overstuffed closet! Start by purging the room of clothes that she’s outgrown or doesn’t wear anymore, then invest in closet storage system that fits the closet; be sure to include both shelving and hanging space. As with the bookcase, make use of every inch of vertical space; you can always store out-of-season or dressier clothes in the upper reaches of the closet and leave the easy-to-access area for her everyday needs. You can find inexpensive floor vases online that can be tucked into a corner in the closet or set on a shelf to hold everything from wool socks and gloves to rolled up tights and leggings or hair bands.

Cherished Toys
There will be certain dolls and toys that your daughter will never be ready to part with and you can give them a special home on a shelf that is built around the upper perimeter of the room. Build a shelf about a foot from the ceiling all the way around the room and paint or stain it to coordinate with the décor. This is an awesome way to display favorite stuffed toys and dolls as well as heirloom toys that need a safe place to live.
Look Under the Bed
A bed with under-the-bed storage drawers provides much needed space for clothing, blankets and out-of-season gear. Any bed can gain under-the-bed storage by utilizing plastic storage boxes that slide underneath; hide them with a colorful bed skirt.
Easy Storage Options
Your nine-year-old girl is more apt to keep her room picked up if you make it easy for her. Colorful milk crates offer cheap storage for toys, books, skates and sports gear and they’re stackable. Provide a French bulletin board so she can display photos and papers without using thumbtacks or add a magnetic white board so she can write on the board or display artwork and papers. Buy wall plaques that include pegs and hooks for belts, jackets, and backpacks and a behind-the-door organizer that will let her keep everything from shoes to hair bands to dolls neatly in its place.
