Decorating a guest room in an elegant and sumptuous style can be a very effective method of creating a welcoming space for guests. An elegant style of decorating can also work well for daily use, since many families use a guest room as a home office or television room when guests are not staying over. For the best effect, choose a decorating style that not only blends in well with the overall style of your home, but also complements the daily usage of the room.

Choosing a "Gender Neutral" Decorating Style

Always keep in mind when decorating a guest bedroom is that your guests should always feel comfortable and welcome. As such, try to keep your guest bedroom "gender neutral" so that men as well as women will feel equally at home in the room. However, this doesn't mean that you can't create an elegant and sumptuous bedroom, since men as well as women generally enjoy elegant styling. Just try to avoid an overly frilly design as opposed to a design that is elegant but not too fussy.

Create a Spa-Like Guest Bedroom

One way of decorating your guest bedroom for royalty is to create a relaxing spa-like room. Use an overall neutral color palette to accentuate the restful and relaxing feeling in the room, or choose natural shades such as blue, light green or soft yellow. Elegant doesn't always mean fancy, so if you are going for a spa-like effect, keep the look simple but the fabrics elegant and extremely comfortable. White or off-white bedding can look especially nice when you are trying to create a spa feeling, and include a good assortment of comfortable pillows. Natural accessories such as bamboo blinds or a natural fiber area rug can also add to the overall appeal. A basket containing an assortment of lotions or bed linen spray fragrances can be a nice added touch and you can accent the walls with serene tropical wall decor.

Create a Vintage Styled Guest Bedroom

Accentuate the vintage styling of any bedroom by using colors such as soft yellow, cream and beige combined with natural shades such as blue and green. Decorate the room with a down-home atmosphere, but with an emphasis on comfort and luxury. Add a vanity table, or a comfortable reading chair and ottoman if there's room. A small bookshelf with a nice selection of books can also make your guest feel comfortable and welcome. Choose vintage furniture items such as a four post bed and a highboy dresser to add style and elegance, but with a homey and comfortable feel. Artwork of natural outdoors scenery or vintage botanical plant prints can add a nice touch.

Sumptuous Style

You can also choose to go all-out on your decorating style, especially if you generally don't use the room for anything other than a guest bedroom. Choose impressive pieces of furniture from fine woods and add sumptuous bedding for a truly elegant look and feel. Use rich window treatments and add a seating area and a beautiful wall candle sconces with a fragrant candles so that your guests can feel truly comfortable and pampered.

These are great ideas! I think having a guest room in one's home provides a place where your interior decorator fancies can run wild because most of the year your guest room will be clean and uninhabited: the perfect environment for design without outside interference.

Hi Jane --- Nice to see you again! I never thought of it that way, but the guest room is usually the only room in the house that always ready for a magazine cover. Thanks for reading and for your fun comment!
