Build your Own Custom Closet Organizer
68
Although there are many different models and styles of closet organizers on the market, sometimes you might prefer to build your own closet organizer. Not only will this allow you to completely customize the closet space to fit your specific needs, but it can also be a good way of saving money. If you have the skills and tools to build a wood unit, similar to those that can be purchased, these can often provide the best end results. However, even if you don't have access to tools, or have any woodworking skills, you can still use store-bought components to create a customized storage area in your closets.
When your rooms are neat and your closets are organized your home automatically looks more stylish and your favorite home decor accents and art wall plaques will stand out even more.

Building Your Own Closet Organizer
If you plan to build your own closet organizer from scratch, the easiest method is to find some plans for a closet organization unit, and then simply alter it to fit your actual closet measurements. Or, if you have the designing skills necessary to draw up your own plans, the sky is the limit as to what you can create. These types of custom built units often end up looking nicer than the pre-manufactured closet organizers that you can buy, and if well-designed, could even add to your home's property value.
Using Wire Shelving to Create an Organized Closet
If you don't want to get involved in a woodworking project, but still want to add a customized closet organizer, purchasing wire shelving can be an easy way of creating your own organization system. This type of shelving comes in various lengths, but one of the most useful lengths for creating your own layout are long shelves, which you can then cut to whatever size needed to fit your closet. Nail wooden rails onto the walls of the closet at the right heights, to provide support for the wire shelves. One advantage of using this type of shelving material is that it makes it simple to add other types of hanging units to the closet, since you can simply hook the hangers onto the wires, suspending extra storage compartments between the shelves.
Customize a Closet with Canvas Organizers
One simple way of organizing a closet without the need for any building skills is to use compartmentalized canvas organizers which are designed to be suspended from the closet clothes rod. These come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, and can be perfect for storing sweaters, shoes and other small clothing items. However, they can also be extremely useful for organizing other types of closets as well. Add a canvas organizer designed to store shoes to the cleaning closet, using the compartments to store rolls of paper towels for easy access. They also are good for organizing magazines, craft supplies, and other types of things that commonly need to be organized in the closet.
Utilize Plastic Storage Units
Another easy way to make your own closet organizer is using plastic storage drawer units, milk crates, and other plastic storage to create storage customized exactly to what you need. These plastic units are inexpensive, lightweight, and are easy to work with to create the exact arrangement that suits your storage needs.
