Beautiful Bare Windows Wash a Family Room with Light
63
While choosing French fleur de lis grilles and candle wall sconces is a big enough challenge for some amateur decorators, decorating a family room is one of the most challenging tasks a designer can face. There are so many aspects of the room to consider that it can be difficult to navigate them all. One of the biggest issues is the type of window covering or treatment that will be used in the family room. This is extremely important, because there are child safety concerns for some types of window covering, and privacy issues that should be addressed. Instead of worrying about children being harmed by cords or having heavy draperies ruined by chocolaty hands, consider keeping the windows bare. Bare windows may seem like an unusual alternative, but there are ways you can still create privacy and let the room be washed in bright light throughout the day.
Window Film
If you are concerned about who may be looking into your family room, but you like the idea of not having any type of window treatment at all, window film may be the perfect answer. This tinting and security film is designed to provide homeowners with maximum light filtration in, but the reflective coating on the outside of the film keeps privacy at a maximum. If the family room is in full view of neighbors or the street, there is a need and desire to protect privacy. Window film is a great alternative to hanging curtains or blinds, and is relatively inexpensive compared to other types of window treatments.
High Windows
If your family room only has high windows, the need for intricate or elaborate window treatments is diminished. In fact, if there are no privacy concerns about the windows, you can leave them completely bare to let all of the possible sunlight in. One thing to check before deciding to leave them bare is the exterior of the home. For example, if your family room is in a basement, and the windows are up high, close to the ceiling, that makes them at about ground level on the exterior of your home. Make sure that passersby are not able to spy directly into the room.
Sky Lights
Another alternative to having heavily draped windows is to install sky lights in your family room. They allow the sun to filter in and wash the room in a warm, sunny glow. While you may want to cover other windows, the sky lights should remain bare for the maximum sun effect.
Nighttime Coverings
If you like the idea of having bare windows during the day, but are not so crazy about having them bare at night, there are some clever window treatments that you can install that will help you do that. One fun idea is to install a track curtain that slides to the side during the day to let the light in, but slides back to cover the window in the evening for privacy.
Finding the right window treatments for your windows is tricky. Be sure to explore all options, including keeping them bare, before you invest in styles that may not be what you want or need.
