You can add a cozy look to your family room by adding a reading corner. Not only do these areas look attractive and inviting, but you will also increase the functionality of the room. Although you can certainly read while sitting in any chair, creating a dedicated corner for reading will make it more enjoyable.

Choosing the Location

Location is important when creating a reading corner. Since one family member might be reading in the family room while others are watching television, try to position the reading corner so that the reader won't be too disturbed by the sound and glare of the television. Of course, it also might be desirable to position the corner in a way that the reader can glance up from his or her book to catch something on television if they choose to. Lighting is an important consideration when choosing a reading corner location. If you have a corner close to a window, this can make for a very pleasant location. Not only will there be a good amount of natural light, but an open window can also be quite pleasant during warmer weather. You should also include a blind or shade on the window so that it can be lowered during the times of the day when the sunlight might be too intense for comfort.

Making the Reading Corner Comfortable

One of the most important features for a reading corner is a nice comfortable chair or loveseat, depending on your personal preferences. Adding a small ottoman or foot stool can also be a nice touch. Keep a tapestry throw or light blanket close by, which can be useful in cold weather as well as during cool summer evenings. A small end table is often useful, especially to hold a drink or a few snacks to enjoy while reading, or as a convenient spot to stash a pair of reading glasses or your favorite book. A small bookcase is almost a must to provide a nice reading corner environment. Make sure there is a comfortable level of light in the corner so that it is easy to read without eye strain. Even if the corner is located close to a window, you will need to add a good reading lamp for nighttime reading. A floor lamp can be a good choice, or install a wall-mounted lamp on an adjustable arm.

Decorating and Accessorizing the Reading Corner

In addition to providing the basic necessities, there are a few decorating touches you can add to your family room reading corner to add additional interest. A small shelf on the wall can be used to display a favorite book and small accessories. Wainscoting that tie into the style of your room connect the reading corner to the rest of the room. A plant also makes a nice addition to a reading corner, providing a splash of color and life. You can also add a comfortable touch by adding a basket of small snacks, perhaps a place to keep a pair of slippers handy, and a decorative cup full of bookmarks so that anybody who stops by to read a few pages of their favorite book can mark their place when they are finished. Wall sconce candle holders provide a soft relaxing ambiance.
